This year, the PAB’s summer outing was to Springfields (near Spalding) on Monday 28th July. Famous for its beautiful gardens and shopping outlet, there was plenty for everyone to do and was a great day out for everyone.
The main draw was the Festival Gardens – a beautifully landscaped area, featuring Chelsea-style celebrity showcase gardens, and most recently, a collection of spectacular stainless steel sculptures throughout the gardens by designer Stephen Newby. The ‘blown’ steel sculptures are largely based around a water theme, featuring a water pyramid fountain, pillow planters and a specially commissioned 15’ ‘Kaleidoscope Wheel’, situated in the canal. The magnificent Springfields Display Fountains combined music, water and lights for a wonderful show.
“It was a lovely sunny day when we left Westgate for a day in Spalding. The trip was part funded by a donation from Asda’s Community Fund and was greatly enjoyed by everyone. Some ventured onto the Spalding Water Taxi for a foray into Spalding and were treated to a lovely peaceful ride along the Coronation Channel and the River Welland which was alive with bird life. Those who stayed at Springfields returned to the bus laden with shopping bags of all sizes, loaded onto to the coach by Sean our Grettons driver who looked after us very well. We all said our goodbyes in Westgate at 4.30 with requests to repeat the trip for Christmas shopping!” Carol Abell – PAB Chair and sighted guide.
We will be announcing more tips soon (via the website and newsletter) so be sure to get in touch if you are interested in joining us for a fun day out!
