As well as competing against other local teams, the Peterborough blind and partially sighted bowls team compete in their own bowls tournament at the Peterborough & District Bowls Centre. The bowlers usually meet every two weeks for the sport and the good company, but twice a year the stakes are raised in the PAB bowls tournament!
The Mayor, Councillor June Stokes, enjoyed the competition this year and presented the trophy to the winner, Sean McGaughey pictured above, and Liz Ebbage the runner up.
“This is the second time I have won the trophy so I am really pleased. It’s a big achievement as when I first started I nearly gave up because I was so rubbish! Some really great members were on hand to teach me and after a few weeks I started getting the hang of it and now I love it. They helped me with things like my technique and stance and also tips like how to pick the right ball etc. I lost my sight completely due to diabetes, so my wife Tina comes along to guide me to the matt. It’s a great social event for the two of us, especially the coffee or drinks in the bar afterwards where you can have a good laugh and catch up with friends. Most players in the club have some sight and can see the bowls, but if you can’t, callers will describe the positions of them using a clock face technique, and the matt and centre string will help you get into the right position. I enjoy it whether I win or lose and you don’t need any experience – it’s just important to have FUN! I would recommend it to anyone, no matter what age you are, because after a few weeks, you will love it as much as I do.” Sean McGaughey
The PAB team are always keen to attract new bowlers (with or without experience) so why not come along and give it a try. It’s a sport for all ages with plenty of younger members enjoying the game too. Equipment and advice will be available to help you get started. Sighted guides will be on hand to help, or you are welcome to bring a friend to guide you on the playing area. Games take place each fortnight on a Thursday evening at Peterborough & District Bowls Centre
