PAB received funding from the People’s Health Trust (money raised by the health lottery) for a 2-year project to increase activities for blind and partially sighted people in Peterborough. We are pleased to announce that this has enabled us to launch 3 new activities. More details can be found on our activities page or by clicking on the links below.
Cinema club: The club meets once a month to enjoy a different film (with audio description) at Showcase cinema in Peterborough. After the film, there is the option to have a coffee or snack in the venue’s lounge bar where you can discuss the film or suggest ideas for the next film if one of the trailers has interested you. So far we have seen two films – Ab-Fab and the live screening of Andre Riue’s annual Maastritch concert. Both were warmly received by the members who attended. “I can’t believe I’m meeting such lovely people since I joined the walking group and cinema group. What shall we be doing next?” Joan White (aged 97!) from Burton Street
Walking Group: The group meets twice a month at different locations around Peterborough and is a great way to keep fit, socialise and explore different parts of the city. This could be one of the many parks or a guided tour of the city. Our walks (usually lasting 1 hour) are guide dog friendly and on smooth surfaces for white cane users. We can provide volunteer guides if you do not have your own and can help organise transport to the different locations if required. Walks are tailored to the individuals and we go at a pace that is suitable for all. Please click here for more information about the walking group.
“Our last meeting was a walk in the park, through colourful flowerbeds and the chatter of birds. This was followed by coffee and some wonderful chocolates brought by Joan”. Norma Wildman, PAB volunteer
Technology Group: Our members wanted a group where they could meet to find out about new technology that could improve their lives. Our new fortnightly group meets at the PAB office in Westgate (just opposite the bus station and at the back of Westgate Church). Initially this will be a self help group (we have a wealth of knowledge within the group which we can use to help one another) but we are in discussions with an expert who may be able to run the group permanently. If you would you like to know more about technology, are having trouble deciding which equipment to buy, or need help with existing products, this is the club for you! Please click here for more information about the technology group.
