Six members of staff from Perkins, an engine manufacturer in Peterborough, have chosen to support PAB in the upcoming London to Brighton cycle ride. They will each look for sponsorship to complete the ride which takes place on the 6th September 2015, and all proceeds will be donated to the PAB. They are hoping to raise well over £600 which will help towards some of the exciting projects PAB has in development!

The ride is organised by and over 1000 people are expected to take part raising funds for hundreds of different charities this year. The challenge starts in South London and passes through Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead, Haywards Heath, to finally finish in Brighton having completed 54 miles!

Cycle training may be well under way, but PAB wanted to challenge them to another type of training – learning how to guide a blind or partially sighted person! We wanted to inspire them for the tough challenge ahead and let them see first hand what their hard work will be for!

Kerry from Guide Dogs and the PAB team arranged for them to complete a 2 hour training session held at our offices. After a quick introduction about the charity and the people we support, it was time for everyone to get acquainted with life as a blind person! Wearing blindfolds, the Perkins staff were asked to perform a range of simple tasks so they could start to see how difficult everyday tasks can be. Even putting themselves in age order required far greater communication than anyone had predicted! Still wearing the blindfolds they were paired up and took it in turns navigating each other around the office to learn how venerable you can feel when you can’t see the danger around you.

Next it was experiencing different eye conditions using our simulation specs and a quiz aimed at dispelling some of the myths surrounding sight loss and a question and answer session to finish. The Perkins staff said that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were happy to be involved with the charity. Please click here to see some of the training picture on our gallery page.
