Calibre Audio Library improves the quality of life for people with sight problems or other disabilities, who cannot read print, by bringing them the pleasure of reading through a free nationwide postal service of recorded books.

If your sight is poor, or if you have another disability that prevents you reading print, you can still enjoy all the pleasure a good book brings. Calibre is a national charity providing a subscription-free postal service of audio books for adults and children with sight problems, dyslexia or other disabilities, who cannot read print. Their library has the largest lending collection of unabridged audio books in the UK (no special equipment needed) which means there is something for all tastes.

If you have never listened to an audio book, of course you will not know what you are missing! Audio books can replace other hobbies like watching television, reading a newspaper or browsing the internet that may become impossible with increased loss of sight. Calibre offer a free 3 month trial to anyone who qualifies to receive our service. This provides an opportunity to discover whether audio books are for you.

You can become a member if you:

  • Can’t see well enough to read ordinary books (you do not need to be registered blind or partially sighted) and live in the UK or other EU County
  • have dyslexia or another disability that makes it difficult to use books and live in the UK

One of their guiding principles is to supply books in a format that can be played on ordinary household equipment. This means that members can select a machine that suits their needs. For example they can listen to our audio books on portable equipment (like a Walkman), so that they can take books into the garden, on holiday or on long journeys.

What our postal library service includes:

  • A choice of 8,500 audio books for all tastes – fiction and non-fiction
  • Over 1,800 books for children and young people
  • Books read cover to cover by professional actors and broadcasters
  • Most books in digital format on MP3 CD or USB memory stick
  • Free postage and no fines for late, damaged or lost books
  • Flexible lending to suit your needs
  • The option to choose your books online
  • A friendly, personal, quick service.
  • No annual subscriptions – only a one time administration fee of £35 (£20 for Young Calibre) to join.
  • 200 new audio books each year and (over 4,000 of their books are not available anywhere else)

How the service works

When you become a member they will ask you what kind of books you like to read and whether you want books on digital MP3 disks, via online streaming, or USB memory sticks. For people without a computer, they also offer 2 players for listening to Calibre audio books on USB memory sticks (The Boombox Plus and Kings Audio Sovereign). Members can create their own reading lists, or can be sent books which fall into the categories that you select. They will never send you the same book twice and you will always have a book to listen to. The book is posted free of charge and once you have listened to it, you can send it back free of charge too.

Buy someone a lifetime of audio books for under £70

Calibre offer an all inclusive joining package from only £65 – this single payment covers our £35 joining fee, MP3 player and fast track registration – an excellent gift for a relative or friend unable to read print through visual impairment, dyslexia or another physical disability.
