Remaining independent can sometimes be a challenge after losing all or part of your sight. Travelling around is more difficult and Taxis can be too expensive for frequent use. That’s why PAB regularly campaigns for better access and services for Blind and partially sighted users. We want to help our members to feel confident travelling on their own by working with transport companies and offering free training and advice to their employees. We have provided some information below which you might find useful.

Peterborough City Council Community Transport

Peterborough City Council Community Transport provides a range of accessible transport services for people who have difficulty accessing or have no access to public transport, such as:

  • Community Link – a door-to-door bus service in Peterborough City
  • Rural Dial-a-Ride – for anyone living in the villages surrounding Peterborough. Call S.T.A.R.T (Specialised Transport And Road Travel) on 01733 394545 or email
  • A number of volunteer Community Car schemes around the area. The main scheme of the city is the WRVS social car scheme. Call 01733 560769.

Peterborough bus station is right at the heart of the City with lift and stair access directly into Westgate Shopping centre.

The Travelchoice Centre

The centre is run by Peterborough City Council and is located in the Queensgate Bus Station. It provides members of the public with travel information for nationwide bus, coach and train services as well as walking and cycling options in Peterborough.

Here, blind or partially sighted residents can apply for a pass that allows free travel in England on buses. You can also download and print the form from their website. Please note that you will need to provide evidence that you are blind or partially sighted, such as registration with an appropriate association or body (e.g. social services) or certificate of vision impairment (ask your GP to refer you to an eye specialist).

Peterborough is a busy station with good connections to London, Birmingham and the North. There are six main train operators from Peterborough station: Grand Central Trains, Cross Country Trains, East Midlands, First Capital Connect, First Hull Trains and East Coast Trains. Trained staff are able to assist customers with their journey requirements but ask that arrangements are made at least 24 hours in advance so they can help you to plan the easiest route to your destination, book your train tickets, guide your around the station, help you board the train or meet you at your destination. Tickets can also be posted to your home address.
